TREK OVERVIEW

Embark on the Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, for a classic Kilimanjaro trek. This popular route offers a unique trekking experience with comfortable hut accommodations and stunning views. Over six days, you’ll traverse through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforest to alpine desert, culminating in the exhilarating ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

SAFARI ITINERARY

Day 1: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you’ll be met by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Take the day to rest and prepare for the trek, enjoying a pre-trek briefing to go over the itinerary and gear. Overnight in Moshi.

  • Transfer to Marangu Gate: Approx. 1 hour.
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours.
  • Elevation Gain: From 1,800 meters (5,906 feet) at Marangu Gate to 2,700 meters (8,858 feet) at Mandara Hut.

After transferring to Marangu Gate and completing park registration, begin your hike through the lush rainforest to Mandara Hut. Enjoy the rich vegetation and wildlife along the way. Arrive at Mandara Hut, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.

  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours.
  • Elevation Gain: From 2,700 meters (8,858 feet) at Mandara Hut to 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) at Horombo Hut.

Ascend through the forest and into the heathland zone, heading towards Horombo Hut. The trek offers fantastic views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks and the surrounding landscape. Spend the night at Horombo Hut with spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

  • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours.
  • Elevation Gain: From 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) at Horombo Hut to 4,703 meters (15,430 feet) at Kibo Hut.

Trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut, moving through the alpine desert zone. The landscape becomes more arid, offering panoramic views. Kibo Hut, at the base of the summit, is where you’ll rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

  • Ascent to Uhuru Peak: 6-8 hours.
  • Elevation Gain: From 4,703 meters (15,430 feet) at Kibo Hut to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) at Uhuru Peak.
  • Descent to Horombo Hut: 6-7 hours.

Start your summit attempt at midnight, climbing through the night to reach Uhuru Peak just before sunrise. After taking in the summit views, descend back to Horombo Hut, passing through the changing landscapes.

  • Descent to Marangu Gate: 5-6 hours.
  • Elevation Loss: From 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) at Horombo Hut to 1,800 meters (5,906 feet) at Marangu Gate.

Descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, completing your trek. At the gate, receive your certificate of achievement. Transfer back to Moshi, where you can celebrate your successful climb and relax. Overnight at your hotel or prepare for your onward journey.
